The process of changing waste materials into useful products in order to stop wasting potentially re-usable materials, reducing the pressure on new raw materials and usage of energy, pollution of both air and water by incineration or land filling and also the need of disposing the waste in conventional methods. Recycling also reduces the production of greenhouse gases that are caused due to burning of waste. Thus it is evident that recycling can be termed as one of the most important constituents of waste reduction in today’s modern world. It is the third of the 3-R hierarchy of waste, namely – “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.”
Some of the most commonly used recyclable materials are electronics, metals, glass, plastics, paper etc. Composting is NOT considered as recycling because no new materials are bound. Thus necessary conditions for recycling materials are that they must supply a new fresh supply of the same material on proper curbing. For example, old office can be curbed in such a way that we obtain new office paper or used foamed polystyrene can also be converted into new polystyrene. Thus these are examples of recyclable materials and give a new supply of the same material that they were considered wastes of.
